Caffeinated Creatures

Embracing my love for unusual and unique creatures, I’ve crafted a retro funky wallpaper design utilising my uncommon animals of the alphabet kids book illustration – F is for Flying Fish, that can now be seen at Evergreen Cafe Gallery.

In my latest caffeine fuelled creation they’re now soaring across walls in a whimsical display of flying fins! From their aerodynamic leaps to their remarkable ability to glide above water, these fascinating creatures bring a touch of magic with them. Did you know that flying fish can glide for hundreds of meters, sometimes even reaching heights of over 4 feet above the water’s surface?

What do you do to be involved in the community?

Living and working in a small town like Jamestown, South Australia, with a population of just over 1500, offers a unique opportunity to become deeply involved in the community. As a kids’ book illustrator and cafe art gallery owner, I’ve found that our cafe serves not only as a place for delicious coffee and locally sourced food but also as a vibrant hub where residents, tourists, and social groups come together.

One of the most rewarding aspects of running our cafe has been the sense of community it fosters. At first, I was worried about remembering everyone’s names and their regular orders, but over time, I’ve come to know hundreds of names and preferences. From the morning regulars who start their day with a strong latte to the afternoon tea aficionados who prefer herbal blends, each person who walks through our doors becomes a familiar face, and many have become friends.

This deep connection to the community extends beyond the walls of our cafe. It’s not uncommon for me to bump into regulars on the street and exchange warm greetings by name. In a world where it’s easy to feel disconnected, these small interactions create a sense of belonging and camaraderie that is truly special.

If you’re ever feeling lonely or disconnected, I would encourage you to consider getting involved in your local community. Whether it’s through volunteering, joining clubs or organizations, or, like me, opening a business that becomes a gathering place, there are countless ways to connect with those around you. Small towns like Jamestown may seem quiet at first glance, but beneath the surface, they are filled with a diverse cast of characters who enrich each other’s lives in ways big and small.

In an age where technology often dominates our interactions, the importance of face-to-face connections cannot be overstated. By fostering a sense of community, we not only support each other but also create a more vibrant and fulfilling way of life. So next time you’re feeling the urge to reach out and connect, consider taking a step into your local community. You may be surprised by the connections you make and the sense of belonging you find.
