Artist Self-Care

What could you do more of?

I could do more art, I could always do more art. However I feel like I’m doing about as much art as I can manage, given that I’m running a six day a week cafe, being a parent and husband, dog and cat owner, a human that has to eat, pay bills and provide shelter… but I could always do more art. Maybe I could be more artful in everything that I do, if I don’t have time to create masterpieces on canvas on a daily basis.

I could spend more time with my kids, I could always spend more time with my kids. However I feel I’m spending about as much time with my kids as I can manage at the moment, given my aforementioned commitments.

Spend more time being a cafe boss, I could always spend more time being a cafe boss… I think you get the picture.

I think ‘I could’ is just about as damaging as ‘I should’ , or what I like to call shoulding on myself.

Everything is a balance between the things you have to do, the things you want to do, and the things that you need to do to fill your cup, to keep you functioning as the best version of yourself.

So I think circling back to the original question of ‘what could I be doing more of?’ I think the answer is self care because without a fully functioning human being, you can’t fit all of those other things into the schedule that we like to stuff to overflowing.

Maybe it should be a question of what you could be doing less of, so you can be doing more of what matters?

  1. Self-care has to be at the top of the list, otherwise you are useless in any of the pursuits. You know you will always have art and creativity, like a friend, that will wait patiently for you to return.
