Creative Seasons

Are there any activities or hobbies you’ve outgrown or lost interest in over time?

In the past five years, something curious has happened – I haven’t watched movies like I used to. Once a cherished pastime, movie nights have taken a backseat in my life. But before you assume I’ve fallen out of love with cinema, let me assure you, that’s far from the truth.

As a busy parent and business owner, every spare moment I have is a precious gift. And rather than spending it passively consuming art, I’ve chosen to dedicate that time to creating my own. It all began around the same time I rekindled my passion for art. Suddenly, the urge to draw became insatiable.

Now, don’t misunderstand me – I still adore movies. The magic of storytelling on screen captivates me just as it always has. But when faced with the choice between watching a film or diving into my creative process, the latter wins without hesitation. It’s not about a lack of time; it’s about priorities.

The decision to forgo movie nights wasn’t easy. I grappled with guilt at first, feeling as though I was abandoning a beloved hobby. Yet, as I immersed myself deeper into my art, I discovered a sense of fulfillment unlike any I had experienced before.

Creating art has become my sanctuary, my place of solace and joy. It’s where I find myself lost in the flow, utterly consumed by the act of making something from nothing. And while movies offer escapism, art provides a different kind of escape – one where I am both the creator and the audience.

Some may view my choice as extreme – after all, what harm is there in indulging in a two-hour film every now and then? But for me, it’s about more than just time management. It’s about fully embracing my passion and committing to the journey of artistic expression.

So, if you find yourself longing to create but struggling to find the time, perhaps it’s worth examining what activities you can trim from your schedule. For me, it meant bidding farewell to movie nights for the time being. But who knows? Maybe one day, I’ll reserve those cinematic adventures for the rare occasions when I’m under the weather. Until then, you’ll find me lost in the colorful world of my own creations, grateful for every moment I spend bringing them to life.
