Comfort is the killer of Creativity

We often hear that “comfort is the killer of creativity,” and there’s some truth to that. When we’re too cosy, we tend to stick to what’s safe and familiar. Creativity, on the other hand, thrives in uncharted territory, where uncertainty and discomfort push us to explore new ideas. So why not snuggle up with an uncomfortable coconut crab pillow and embrace the unexpected? Sure, it might not be the typical choice for a pillow design, but that’s exactly why it’s so perfect.

Scour the news for an entirely uninteresting story. Consider how it connects to your life. Write about that.

I don’t believe in “uninteresting” stories. Often, it’s just a matter of not having enough background or not looking deeply enough to see the layers of intrigue beneath the surface.

Take coconut crabs, for instance. They rarely make headlines, and if they did, the focus would likely be on their fearsome appearance or formidable claws. But dig a little deeper, and you’ll find a fascinating creature that challenges our perceptions and begs us to ask questions about adaptation, evolution, and the marvels of nature.

This idea resonates with me as an artist and storyteller. In my art, I aim to uncover and celebrate the hidden beauty and uniqueness of creatures like the coconut crab. It’s about seeing the world through a lens of curiosity and wonder, rather than letting superficial judgments dictate what’s worth our time.

So, the next time you encounter something that seems uninteresting, take a moment to look closer. Whether it’s a seemingly mundane news story or an overlooked creature like the coconut crab, there’s always more to discover when you’re willing to embrace discomfort and venture beyond the surface. Who knows? You might find inspiration in the most unexpected places, or at the very least, a peculiar new pillow for your couch!
