If we’d protect an alien, why not Earth’s creatures?

When I created my alien octopus artwork, I imagined a world where humans discovered an otherworldly being so mesmerising that they couldn’t help but treat it with the utmost care. If we found creatures like these—brimming with beauty, mystery, and uniqueness—surely we would protect them, nurture them, and preserve their environments. At least, that’s the ideal. #ProtectWildlife #AnimalLove #AlienOctopus #OctopusWallArt

What if we channeled that reverence into how we treat the animals and ecosystems of our own planet? It’s something I think about often, especially as someone who creates art inspired by nature. It’s also a philosophy I try to live by, and one that came to life unexpectedly in the form of Chocky—our beloved dog, who we found running loose in the streets of Jamestown.

What’s the coolest thing you’ve ever found (and kept)?

It was the end of a long café day when we first spotted her: a small, corgi-kelpie cross darting nervously between parked cars. She was collarless, clearly frightened, and in need of help. We brought her back to the café, gave her water, and posted on the local Facebook group in the hopes of finding her owners.

Eventually, we tracked them down and learned that Chocky’s skittish behavior was due to her biggest fear: loud noises. Her family’s home was, unfortunately, next door to a gun club, and every time a session started, poor Chocky would panic and run away.

When the time came to give her back, our daughters were heartbroken. They had fallen head over heels for her sweet nature in just a short time. Sensing this, her owners made an unexpected offer: Would we like to take her on?

Of course, we said yes, and since that day, Chocky has been a dream addition to our family. She’s patient, gentle, and endlessly loving with the kids. Her only quirk is her nervousness during thunderstorms, but we make sure she feels safe and secure whenever the skies grow dark.

Chocky has taught us a lot about compassion—about the importance of stepping in when another living being is in need, and about creating an environment where they can thrive.

Thinking back to my alien octopus artwork, I wonder: What if we treated all animals with the same awe and care as we would an extraordinary discovery from another planet? Creatures like Chocky—and the countless other species we share the Earth with—deserve that level of respect.

Chocky may not have tentacles or hail from a distant galaxy, but she’s a living reminder that every life has value. And sometimes, the coolest thing you’ll ever find is right here on Earth, waiting for you to notice.

So, what’s the coolest thing you’ve ever found and kept? For us, it’s Chocky, without a doubt.
