Favourite Artists

Who are your favorite artists?

My favourite artists range from Banksy and Salvador Dali to filmmakers the Coen Brothers and Hitchcock. But I think I’d like to focus on artists that have embraced the world of social media to help them become what I’d class as thriving artists.

First up there’s Gawx who is an equally talented filmmaker as he is an artist. He doesn’t upload that regularly but when he does it’s definitely worth the wait and always really entertaining. His videos focus on projects from beginning to end like, ‘A week in the life of a YouTube Artist’, ‘Designing my first clothing collection’ and ‘Spray painting my house while my parents are away’. Gawx is a true inspiration for YouTube art videos and a good example of quality over quantity. Maybe I should focus on making less videos but up the production quality and have each video follow the creation of an entire kids book from beginning to end instead of creating videos and livestreams of each step of the way.

Then there’s Slew a fine artist, videographer and YouTuber working out of his dream studio. This is definitely a case of the perfect studio to film in. Just like Gawx, Slew has a love of filmmaking and storytelling and this shines though with his very well produced YouTube videos; ‘I painted myself everyday for a week’, ‘How did I get my own studio?’, and ‘How I became a 23 year old full time artist’ I think I see a pattern of where I want to head with my own YouTube channel. I’ve come more from the Gary Vee school of produce as much content as you can. But I know the art videos that I enjoy watching are ones that follow entire projects from begging to end, tell a good story and are well produced.

Finally there is Fran Meneses who is a Brooklyn illustrator who creates long form vlogs around her business selling her art and t-shirts. I often thought that the perfect art videos would something in the style of a Casey Niestat video, if he was an artist. That would be my ideal art video and Fran has this vibe except with the volume turned right down and 7 min videos becoming 30min vlogs.

Either way. What I’m learning from actually writing this blog is that I’m not producing anything like this. I’ve been following the path of producing as much content as possible and not focussing as much on individual projects, storytelling and production quality. So I think I’ll be refining my style in the future. As I am a filmmaker, enjoy these style of videos and love the filmmaking process as much as I love illustration. So my YouTube channel may change course in the near future.
