Top 10 Traits of a Successful Artist

Are you a good judge of character?

I’m not sure that I’m a very good judge of character but one thing I do notice is the characteristics of the thriving artist. There are many repeating traits, that I try to include in that avatar of the thriving artist that I attempt to emulate in my day to day. Most days I fail, but I suppose that’s why they call it an artistic practice.

Success isn’t just about talent; it’s a complex mix of skills, mindset, and dedication. Successful thriving artists share a set of characteristics no matter what form their creativity takes. So like all good blog posts I’ve made a list of the top 10 thriving artist traits.

  1. Passion and Dedication: Successful artists are deeply passionate about their craft of choice. It’s the art they are compelled to create irrespective of any financial return. This passion or obsession fuels their dedication, pushing them to hone their skills continuously. Whether it’s painting, music, or any other form of art, a burning passion that’s so hot it almost hurts is the foundation of a thriving artistic journey. They don’t scroll social posts, they make art, and are immune to our distraction filled world.
  2. Resilience in the Face of Challenges: Rejections, setbacks, and criticism are inherent in the artistic journey. Thriving artists embrace these challenges with resilience, viewing them as opportunities for growth rather than obstacles. The ability to bounce back from setbacks is a hallmark of a successful artist. Because the role of the artist is to stir some kind of response, it might be love, or it could be hate and both are a positive that you are on the right path.
  3. Continuous Learning: The art world evolves, and thriving artists evolve with it. Successful artists commit to a lifelong journey of learning. They stay curious, explore new techniques, and remain open to diverse influences, ensuring their work stays relevant and innovative. While at the same time having a fine tuned filter to prevent themselves getting set off course by the latest shiny object. Always having perspective on your primary goals is at the forefront.
  4. Authenticity and Originality: Authenticity sets thriving artists apart especially in the emerging world of AI. They express their unique voice, telling stories that resonate with their experiences and perspectives. Originality doesn’t necessarily mean creating something entirely new; it’s about infusing your own personal authenticity into the work. This can also be done by documenting the creation of the art, showing behind the scenes and letting your personality shine.
  5. Effective Time Management: My current nemesis while owning a cafe. Balancing the creative process with the demands of life requires effective time management, especially as a parent artist. Successful artists prioritize their time, creating a structured routine that allows for both creativity and necessary commitments.
  6. Strong Work Ethic: Consistency is key in the artistic realm. Thriving artists exhibit a strong work ethic, consistently putting in the hours required to refine their skills and produce high-quality work. The discipline to show up and work consistently is a defining trait. They never stop making, they always keep pushing forward, even in the face of adversity.
  7. Adaptability to Change: The art world is dynamic, with trends and preferences constantly shifting. Successful artists adapt to change, embracing new technologies, styles, and mediums. This adaptability ensures they remain relevant and able to connect with diverse audiences.
  8. Effective Networking and Marketing: Thriving artists understand the importance of networking and self-promotion. Building connections within the artistic community and beyond helps in creating opportunities for collaboration, exhibitions, and exposure.
  9. Financial Savvy: Beyond the creative process, successful artists manage the business side of their craft. This includes understanding the market value of their work, budgeting, and navigating the financial aspects of their art business.
  10. Embracing Critique and Feedback: Constructive criticism is a powerful tool for growth. Thriving artists welcome feedback, using it to refine their work and push their boundaries. The ability to separate personal identity from artistic creations allows for continuous improvement.

So my avatar I’ve created for being a successful thriving artist is a multifaceted individual who combines artistic prowess with resilience, adaptability, and a commitment to growth. While talent is undoubtedly important, it’s the cultivation of these traits that propels artists toward sustained success in the ever-evolving world of art.
